It just seems to follow a more deliberate path where they shifted jamming gears in a more natural way as opposed to the abrupt drop-off into drums followed by what was generally quiet noodling and weird sounds for the sake of weird sounds. I definitely like some of that stuff too, but my ear just prefers the earlier, more organic approach.

You really were chasing Dark Star in those early years. It's interesting how in an era where it was so common, you kept getting all the Other One shows for the first couple of years. Though much of that had to do with needing to leave early. That must be awful to see and hear all those great jams you had to miss due to youthful curfew.

I sort of self-imposed that on myself once on accident. The first time I saw Dark Star Orchestra in February 2001 somehow I didn't know they did their own encore after the one from the Dead show they were doing. I knew the setlist so during US Blues when one of my buddies who had to be up in the morning wanted to start making an early retreat back to the car I didn't mind. We sat in the car for a good half hour waiting for our third friend, my buddy getting more and more annoyed. He finally showed up and said "that Dark Star was great." I said "what Dark Star?" Apparently they kept going with a big Dark Star>Mind Left Body>Dark Star>St Stephen>Playin reprise jam. Never left another DSO show early again. (I've since heard what I missed, it was alright, nothing groundbreaking or anything, but still, I walked out of a show 2 minutes before a Dark Star...)Jim Fhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07775659356285581409noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6100854883581054455.post-20672271520368055252018-01-09T19:32:23.111-08:002018-01-09T19:32:23.111-08:00You were very lucky to see all these California sh...You were very lucky to see all these California shows in 1972.
